Audience

I handed out 10 questionnaires to people between the ages of 16 and 18 as they are our ideal target audience. The questions were as follows:

- How old are you?

- What is your gender?

- Do you like horror films?

- What do you like most about horror films?

- What do you dislike most about horror films?

- What is your favourite horror film?

- Why do you like that film?

- What do you think of modern horror films?

- What improvements would you like to make to modern horror films?

- How often do you watch horror films and how?

I found out the following:

100% of those who answered that they did not like horror films, explained that they disliked the gore and sadistic nature of most horror films.

80% of people who enjoyed horror films explained that they enjoyed the complex story lines, the other 20% like how horror films push the boundaries of normal conventions and explore controversial topics.

The most popular horror film, which a majority of 60% is The Grudge because they thought the story line was gripping and the children were scary.

90% disliked the amounts of special effects used in horror films. They felt that often there was an excessive amount of gore, and this could put them off watching the films.

The general consensus was that modern films weighed to heavily on creating amazing special effects leading to the films lacking substance. In terms of storylines, the participants enjoyed older films more for this very reason. Therefore, in modern films they would like to see thought out storylines and the right amount of special effects.

60% said they like to watch horror films at the cinema, but not too often as it is expensive, and 40% said they like to watch horror films at home, because it is more comfortable and you can rewind bits you missed or want to watch again.

From the data collected I can conclude that to make a good horror films, more emphasis should be placed on creating a gripping thrilling storyline, with just the right amount of special effects and gore to enhance the film, not take over it.
